Hola Familia,

As we plan for the New Year I wanted to share some of my reflections of Pasion y Arte's accomplishments over the past four years.

In our first year of existence our performances included “Poder de Una Mujer/Strength of a Woman”, which premiered at CEC and that later moved to New York City's Chasama Theater on 42nd and Broadway for a two week run receiving excellent reviews.

In 2002 and 2003 we presented “Poder de Una Mujer/Strength of a Woman” and “La Luna de Par en Par/The Moon Wide Open” at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. In 2003 we participated in the Philadelphia's Dance Boom Festival '03 held at the Wilma Theater where we premiered “El Cuerpo Recuerda/The Body Remembers”.

Pasion y Arte was selected for inclusion in the touring roster of Penn PAT, the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour a program designed to increase opportunities for professional Pennsylvania based performing artists seeking to obtain successful touring engagements in 2003.

Later in 2003 we participated in “Divine Women Divine Work” at the Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia, a week-end of performances honoring the works and accomplishments of woman artists.

January 2004 marked a pivotal year for Pasion y Arte. We were awarded a highly competitive and prestigious grant from Dance Advance for artistic excellence for the continued development of “La Luna de Par en Par/The Moon Wide Open” a trilogy staged as a multi-disciplinary work that explores the female psyche through our experience of the dance.

Also in 2004, I was awarded an apprentiship grant in choreography from the Pennsylvania Arts Council Cultural Partnership to study in Spain under the tutelage of Flamenco Master, Alejandro Granados.

Additionally I received a Leeway Foundation Grant for my work as choreographer in the Feria de Abril at the International House, April 2004..

Mid January Pasion y Arte found itself performing at The Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City as part of the Puerto Rican Embassy's “Routes of Rhythms” collaboration with the HOWL Festival.

On January 2005, the Company will be showcased at APAP, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters held in New York City. This exposure is critical in our goal to be a national touring company. And we have secured an agent in Community Communications Agency allowing us to explore all the national and international touring possibilities as well as summer festivals.

“La Luna de Par en Par/The Moon Wide Open: The Trilogy” will premiere in its entirety at The Henry Street Settlement, New York City, in April 2005 and will return to Philadelphia's Painted Bride in October 2005. This piece will tour the University circuit throughout the country in 2006.

Along with our growth as a dance company, our community outreach is extensive.

We have been performing and lecturing throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey Schools. We look to extend this outreach to more Latino communities, especially to young Latino women.

Pasion y Arte Garage Studio is located in Overbrook Farms in Philadelphia and has various levels of Flamenco classes throughout the week. It also provides scholarship opportunities based on the economic needs of the students. The studio is looking to expand by teaching other forms of dance, such as Indian, Hip Hop, Classical Spanish, and Sevillanas starting mid January 2005.

Pasion y Arte is also in the process of recording the soundtrack to “La Luna de Par”(The Moon Wide Open) and looks forward to its release at the premier in Philadelphia's Painted Bride. A tax-deductible contribution of $50 or more will secure a copy of this soundtrack surely to become a classic.

We are extremely indebted to you, our Pasion y Arte members, for the passion and dedication with which you show your support that allow us to bring this art into your lives. Also, we welcome your continued support through tax-deductible contributions. Your generous support will ensure our continued growth and assist in Pasion y Arte's mission to educate the community and general public regarding Flamenco as a living art form.

Your donations will assist in making Pasion y Arte vision a reality: to provide more scholarships, the expansion of the school through a diversified dance program, support for the creation of new work, promotion of future performances, and workshops with guest Flamenco Masters from Spain.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, performing artists and myself, muchas gracias y hasta pronto!!

Elba Hevia y Vaca

Wokshop Details

His workshop would be $70 per person and would be a two day event composed of two hour sessions each. To express interest in having Ethan come to Philadelphia to give this workshop (most likely in January or February), please email Philadelphia workshop coordinator Veronica Polo at veronica@telerama.com .
